In December 2014, the City of Portland, Ore. took a historic step by including human rights abuses by corporations like private prisons companies in their Social Responsible Investment (SRI) Policy. In addition, the city council moved to include directly impacted people in the SRI Committee that oversees city investments.
We call on Mayor Bill De Blasio and the New York City Council to join Portland and become leaders in the movement to divest from the for-profit prison industry.
