We aim to stop the lobbying power of the private prison industry as a step towards abolishing cages in criminal and immigration policy.
The National Prison Divestment Campaign targets the investors of Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and GEO Group (GEO), the two largest private prison companies in the United States. Profiting from the separations of families, violations of human rights, and general pain caused by these prisons is inhumane and unacceptable.
Prison Divestment Campaign
By driving a wedge between investors and the private prison industry, we can break the industry's lobbying power. Because CCA and GEO are publicly-traded, the ownership is divided among institutions, mutual funds, trust funds, pensions and individuals. Universities, churches, cities, and states invest in these for-profit private prisons through investment management companies such as Blackrock, Lazard, and Vanguard without even knowing. Thus, many of us have a direct relationship with the private prison industry through employment, tuition, taxes, and donations.
These institutional investors hold a great deal of power in CCA and GEO: investors can exercise voting rights and, because they have the freedom to buy and sell shares, investors can leave private prisons without leverage to capitalize. When our local institutions divest from CCA and GEO, and any company owning more than a million shares in the private prison industry, we can cut off the private prison industry's ability to underwrite debt, access capital, and lobby for contracts and pro-incarceration, anti-immigrant policies.
Divestment is the surest way to impactthat profit off of locking our community members behind bars. When we make private prisons a toxic liability in the world of investment, we will make pro-incarceration and anti-immigrant policies that keep those prisons filled a toxic liability for politicians.
