The National Prison Divestment Movement is growing stronger than ever. In the last year, more than $4.1 billion was divested by cities, universities, and financial institutions. Critically, many of these city and university campaigns incorporated the Freedom Cities narrative and movement building strategy that included divestment from the Dakota Access Pipeline, the Israeli occupation of Palestine, and fossil fuels alongside divestment from criminalization. Many campaigns also have prompted next steps that build community control–like organizers working to defund local jails and city officials assessing whether a municipal bank can be created.
Circles correspond to the size of divestment victories. Triangles are launches of new campaigns, or critical advances in active campaigns.
City divestments are in red. University divestments are in gold. Legislative victories are in blue. Movement adoptions of prison divestment are in green. Legal victories are in pink.
The victories and campaigns above explicitly include prison divestment as a core element in campaigns between November 2016 and November 2017. Even more has been divested during this time period from investors in private prisons, Wall Street, and oppressive corporations by Mazaska Talks, Last Real Indians, the Boycott Divest Sanctions and fossil fuel divestment movements, the Forgo Wells campaign, and others.
