SEIU Local 1877 is a statewide local fighting for working families in California, representing more than 25,000 building service workers from Sacramento to San Diego. Local 1877 has worked and is working with security officers, grocery store cleaners, stadium, arena, airport, racetrack and Disneyland workers to fight for their rights and to have a better work environment. They have had many victories by working with other organizations and gaining support of civil rights groups and leaders.
Salvador (Chava) Bustamante is the San Jose staff coordinator for Local 1877 in San Jose. He developed his organizing skills while a prominent rank-and-file leader in the United Farm Workers 1978 Salinas Valley lettuce strike. He is now the Northern California Vice President of Local 1877 and one of the architects of Justice for Janitors, an inspirational organizing campaign of mostly Latino immigrant janitors. Chava also serves on the board of Working Partnerships USA.
