Trip to La Paz and Santa Rosalía

Enlace Photo

Enlace staff, Mary Mendez and Daniel Carrillo, visited La Paz and Santa Rosalía, Baja California Sur, in late March.  The purpose of the visit with SINTTIM (the Independent Union of Maquila Workers) and CISSLABORAL (the Center for Social, Union, and Labor Research) was to evaluate the Seafood Workers Justice Campaign, analyze current state of organizing, create a bi-national plan, and provide workers with workshops on Enlace’s organizing frameworks. In La Paz the meetings were a success because we planned out the fight for the remaining of the year.

Major Koreatown Markets Agree to Stop Selling Hanjin Products

Enlace Photo

posted February 3, 2009

Los AngelesOur January 30, 2009, action was a huge success!  Rosa Ceseña Ramirez, Secretary General of SINTTIM, Enlace staff and many supporters converged at City Market in Koreatown to demand that the store stop selling Hanjin Trading USA Co. products until the company settles the claims of workers who were illegally fired for organizing a union at Hanjin’s Seafood Maquiladora located in Santa Rosalia, Mexico.  After only picketing about 15 minutes, the general manager of the store came out and agreed to our demand.  Not only would he stop selling Hanjin Trading products at that store location, but also at the other three markets that he manages.
The day before the action, another major Korean ethnic market agreed to stop selling Hanjin products as well!

Thank you to the individual community members and to the allies from the following groups who came out and contributed to our quick victory on Jan. 30:
•  Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance (KIWA), which helped us to organize the action and to contact Korean ethnic press

Successful International Day of Action in the Seafood Workers Justice Campaign

posted August 5, 2008

Thank you to all the groups that made July 31 a successful international day of action!

Mexico—Groups in Mexico City, La Paz, and Santa Rosalía successfully led delegations.  In Santa Rosalía a group of 15 workers, led by Rosa Ceseña Ramirez, the Secretary General of SINTTIM, arrived at the Offices of the Municipal President, José Manuel Murillo, but Mr. Murillo nor any staff person was willing to receive them, but the delegation insisted that they be heard and presented their letter.  Soon a letter will be sent to protest the lack of respect shown by the Municipal President and his staff.
